Multivitamins and Acne - Should you take a Multivitamin?

Multivitamins are one of the most popular supplements purchased by the general public. Vitamins are one of the first supplements acne sufferers tend to buy. This is because they are widely available, and we all often assume that any small sickness may be due to vitamin deficiency.

So what's the verdict on multivitamins and acne? Are they a required supplement?

In my opinion, vitamins are one of the least useful supplements for acne and can actually be not helpful for an acne sufferer. (Great, right? Saves you some money!)

Let's talk about the first part. Multivitamins are not very helpful because they aren't really fixing anything an acne sufferer is struggling with. That is, the nutritional deficiencies of an acne sufferer have much more to do with inadequate or incorrect fat consumption as well as the consumption of bad foods such as refined sugars and other toxins added to manufactured or prepared food.

Acne sufferers tend to not have much vitamin deficiency (Except for one, see below).

The other problem is multivitamins are basically unnatural. Eating vitamins outside of the foods they are found in is simply an unnatural thing to do. The unfortunate thing is that the body often sees these vitamins as toxic or useless to the body. Their actual absorption and utilization by the body is certainly very low. The body was designed to extract vitamins from the foods it eats, not to have processed vitamins in huge quantities enter the body directly from a pill.

In general I would not really recommend taking them. They are really a waste of money that could be put towards extremely high quality products such as cod liver oil or supergreens (excellent sources of real vitamins).

I also don't like that by taking a multivitamin you don't really know which vitamin your body needs, which one it is having a reaction to, etc.

In addition, I don't like recommending people to obtain a shelf full of supplements. This method just never works. And I think the multivitamin is one of the useless ones. It also can make people think they are doing something to help their skin when in reality a multivitamin isn't going to do anything to help you get clear skin.

The one exception that I mentioned above is Zinc. Zinc has been found to be low in nearly all acne sufferers. I recommend purchasing a Zinc only supplement and taking 30-50mg a day with food. Getting a quality brand from a company like Nature's Way is very important. You can see the whole article about acne and zinc here.
