The Risks and
Side Effects of Prescription Acne Medications
Nuts are one of those foods that are often recommended by people when someone states they want a diet that will help them with acne. The standard advice is to "eat more fruits and vegetables, with lots of other raw foods such as nuts." The more fruits and vegetables part is talked about extensively on other parts of the site. We will talk about the nuts part here.
Traditionally, any nuts eaten have been soaked for a long time to modify their properties so as to be able to be digested. Raw nuts are rarely heard of in any traditional diet. Today, the nuts in stores are all raw (soaking is a big expense for a company and would make prices prohibitive). In addition, the nuts in stores often have flavorings added or are roasted or have sugar added. All of these things are problems.
Also, nuts are a very common allergen for the acne sufferer. If you are consuming nuts in any quantity with consistency then you should stop for a week or two entirely and then try them again and see if you notice any bad responses. Peanuts especially should not be eaten. (Also, peanuts are not a real nut). Almost everyone knows someone with a strong allergy to peanuts.
The other problem with nuts is their very high Omega 6 ratio. Acne sufferers always have a very high level of Omega 6 fats compared to their Omega 3 or Omega 9 levels. It is important for these fat ratios to be balanced. What happens when you already have high levels of Omega 6 fats and then start consuming a high quantity of very high Omega 6 fat nuts? You get even higher Omega 6 levels which can lead to more acne. This is why fish oil supplements are recommending so highly for acne sufferers, they have great Omega 3 levels. However, if a person starts taking fish oil supplements and also increases nut consumption, there will likely be a negative response.
You want to get your Omega 3 from fish sources and Omega 6 from animal sources. Leave the nuts out and you should have a good balance. Generally people eat more from the animal sources, so we supplement with cod liver oil for very helpful Omega 3.
