The Risks and
Side Effects of Prescription Acne Medications
Parents: You can be either a Big Help or a Major Hindrance to your Child Suffering with Acne
As a parent of a child struggling with acne how you handle your child is very important. Acne is an extremely sensitive topic for most teenagers who are having a real problem with it. Here you'll find some guidelines that will hopefully help to alleviate their suffering.
First thing parents - Stop with all the nonsense about telling your teen to wash better, shower better, or take care of themselves better. This is simply not the cause of acne and you are going to make your teen be utterly disgusted with you. Every single acne sufferer is obsessive about keeping their face clean. Leave them alone on this point.
Second thing - You need to become educated. Acne is, at its root, the effect of nutritional imbalances in the body. The body is simply using the largest organ, the skin, to dispose of waste matter that the body cannot properly handle via the normal channels. In other words, what you feed your child and what you allow them to eat is playing a large role. So you are responsible to a certain extent. What you need to do is become educated so you can help in a nonthreatening way and perhaps even without your child knowing it. (By modifying what foods are available in the home for example)
Third thing - Parents, you need to know your child and understand how he or she is dealing with acne. There are basically 2 types of acne sufferers. One is the type that at the first outbreak wants to go see a dermatologist and wants to see one every few months. This type is much more open to discussing their problem. The other type of teen doesn't want to talk about their acne at all. They would prefer it to be completely ignored. This type of teen is much more sensitive and you need to treat them with extreme care so they are not turned off from you completely. I'll be listing guidelines for each type of teen below.
Helpful Tips for the Teen who Wants to go right to the Dermatologist
This type is a very proactive type of person. They want a quick fix for their acne and they want it now. They think the way to deal with it is by going to a doctor. It is very important to realize that if no medicine from the dermatologist works then these types of people may be on prescription acne medication for 10+ years. This is really not a road you want to go down.
Be very, very concerned about any product that will be taken internally. The side effects for these type of products can be very significant. Whatever you do, avoid accutane at all costs.
Also, if you can, try to help your teen understand that these medications will never cure the source of the problem. They may clear their skin, but the underlying reason for the acne in the first place still exists. A life of prescription drugs is not a future to look forward to, nor is turning to a doctor at every turn. You must help them take control of their own health. It is completely under each person's own control to determine what their health will be.
Helpful Tips for the Teen who wants no doctor's help and wants to try things on their own
This type of teen may be very keen to try every product in the local drugstore. Try to help them out of this phase as quickly as possible. It's simply a waste of time and money. Do respect the teen for trying to solve things on their own.
As I said earlier, you need to be very sensitive with this type. They often don't want to talk about acne. Even comments such as asking them if they want to try to eat healthier they can find offensive. That doesn't mean don't discuss eating healthier, just realize that even if you are trying to help they may show disgust towards you at the time, although deep in their hearts they may feel gratitude. But be certain you actually know what eating healthier means if you talk to them about this! It does not mean stuffing fruits and vegetables down their throat! It does not mean drinking 8 glasses of water a day! Educate yourself and realize how deficient their diet is and start buying real foods. Your first food to keep around in abundance is raw milk, which you can see more info on here.
Finally, try to purchase some quality reading materials for yourself and your teen. You yourself will learn a lot by understanding acne. Also, if your child ever brings the subject of acne up to you, please stop what you are doing and simply listen. Don't start offering advice, just try to listen as best you can. A day later you will be able to bring it up easily and offer a quick suggestion of piece of advice. Always try to be on your child's side, avoiding any sense of accusation that it is their fault.
