Water filtration is an extremely important thing to get right. Water is one of our most consumed substances and it is distributed throughout our body. The cleanest, best water is an important goal.
Which substances are we trying to eliminate from our water? The primary one is chlorine. Chlorine is added to the water of any city water supply to kill off bacteria and pathogens. It performs very well at this task. Unfortunately, chlorine is poison to living things, and that includes humans. It is much easier to filter chlorinated water than to filter out bad bacteria from water, so be happy the city is doing this. The second major element to filter is fluoride. Fluoride is an extremely toxic substance that provides no benefit to teeth or bones, in fact in gives them problems. You can read all about the bad effects of fluoride on a huge number of websites. Chlorine is easy to filter and every filter eliminates it along with a variety of other substances. Fluoride is very difficult to filter and you need a specialized system to clean it up.
There are 3 main systems for home use that we will look at and analyze. They are the filtration methods, reverse osmosis, and distillation.
Filtration Methods
This type is the most popular and uses filter media to put the water through a cartridge which grabs hold of the toxic particles and prevents them from reaching your actual drinking water. These kind are often the cheapest. They will all filter chlorine, but you will need specialized cartridges to reduce the fluoride. Oftentimes fluoride is not completely eliminated.
Reverse Osmosis
This type uses a membrane system to filter water. This type can be somewhat of an annoyance to install and maintain. It certainly filters water of most bad elements. Unfortunately, this system is just not very natural. It seems to do some strange things to water. We have seen some research that indicates it changes water for the worse. After using this type of system for 4 months, we would agree and say the water has a very strange taste and simply does not have the feel of "healthful water."
Distillation
Proponents of this method argue that it is the purest water, as it is the heating and condensation of water to leave only H20 behind. These systems are generally quite expensive to use for an entire household. What these systems do is remove all minerals from the water. What research suggests is that distilled water loses all its properties and tends to leach minerals out of the body. We generally agree with this statement. We have not found distillation to provide very satisfying water. It tastes like "dead" water. In addition, we must consider historically where humans have always obtained water, which is from springs and rivers of quality water. In other words, water with minerals included. There has never been any group of people able to obtain distilled water until recently. We feel this is sufficient to avoid this type of filtering for now unless extensive research demonstrates that distilled water can be consumed without taking all minerals from the body.
How about specific filter recommendations? One quality company is Aquaspace. They make some very affordable filters, especially if you are not trying to provide water for an entire family. The other company to look at for family sized filters is the Berkey gravity filters. These come in a large variety of containers. Be sure to get the fluoride filter addon cartridges.
