The Risks and
Side Effects of Prescription Acne Medications
Water is a critical component of maintaining healthy skin. We need to consume water every day to sustain our lives. It is one of the few diet items that are absolutely essential. Everyone knows how much of our body is made up of water and how important it is. With that said, let's analyze water in regards to acne and how and when it should be consumed.
First, the old standby that 8 glasses of water a day are required is not true. Simplistic statements like this are nearly always wrong. How come? First, it does not take into consideration the weight of a person. A 100 lb high school student and a 240 lb athlete have different needs. To try to make a general statement about how much water they should drink is pointless. Dozens of other factors come into play. For example, the altitude you are at (Climbers of Mt. Everest can confirm how much extra water they need), your weight, how much fruit and other beverages you consume each day, and the climate of your area. In other words, how much water you need depends greatly on your own circumstances.
Next let us talk about the containers you use for water and its temperature. Ideally you should consume water out of a glass container. Unfortunately most plastic containers leach some level of toxins into the water that is not ideal. Certain specially made plastics may be acceptable. The typical plastic water bottles purchased in stores are never a good choice. Water quality is generally poor and they have been sitting in the cheapest plastic containers that can be made. In addition they do cause an abundance of waste that is unnecessary with the disposal of the bottles themselves.
Acne sufferers often benefit by drinking water that is near room temperature. Very cold or ice water can shock the body a bit more than is desired. A recurring theme in natural acne treatment is to avoid over stimulating the body or forcing it to work so hard to clean up what we ingest. Drinking cold water isn't the worst thing you can do, but a more moderate temperature does seem to be easier to assimilate. Test for yourself.
Finally, it is of utmost importance that your water be free of chemicals and pollutants. The only way to do this is by filtering your water in some way. Take a look at out page on water filtration for acne that lists out all the ways we have tried and which type of filtering is best.
