The Risks and
Side Effects of Prescription Acne Medications
There's one thing that acne sufferers almost universally have in common and that is a zinc deficiency. The actual reason for this being so common among acne sufferers is basically unknown. What is known is that zinc is the single most effective mineral or vitamin that someone with acne can use to help clear skin. Zinc is about as close as possible as you can get to a "pop a pill" effective treatment there is.
Fortunately, zinc can be purchased at very cheap prices and one bottle will last a long time. You'll be able to easily test it and see if it works for you. Try to find a quality brand. I prefer Nature's Way brand, but many brands will give you the same results. Try to find a company that tries to make their supplements as natural as possible.
One way to know for sure that you are zinc deficient is to examine your fingernails. If there are any of those white spots or marks on them at all, you are definitely zinc deficient. I would say if you have any nail problems at all you are likely zinc deficient.
Remember to take zinc with meals. The evening meal is usually best. 50mg or so is a good place to start. Try to avoid the 100mg pills. You can always take 2 if you really felt you needed it. I much prefer a smaller intake taken regularly. If you are near or over 200 pounds you may want to take closer to 100mg.
Note that it is unlikely zinc by itself will clear your skin. Zinc will likely make the acne much better but it's not a cure all. You should definitely start taking it and see how it goes.
